Picture: Mystery Engine, What Car is This?
I used to play this game with my car nut friends via email. I decided to put it here this time. What engine is this, and which extremely rare car is it powering? Actually, the car itself is not particularly rare, but this engine option makes the car extremely rare. Experts say that there are only about 50 in existence today, out of approximately 69 ever built.
It was at the Stanford Concours last Sunday.

Gayle & Paul guessed that it's a 68 or 69 big block Corvette. Good guess, but wrong. It's not a Corvette.

No, the flags made me think GM not ford but the only limited prod. cars that came to mind was the 'K' car and I think they did do a hi-po one. and who ever thought is was a vette better take another look at the hood hinge.

Okay, I've tortured everyone enough already. Paul guessed correctly that it's a Camaro. It's a 1969 Camaro with the legendary ZL-1 427 c.i. engine option. It was factory rated at 430hp.
Following is short summary about the ZL-1 engine that I found on the Net:
The idea for the Camaro ZL-1 came from Chevrolet dealer and drag racer Fred Gibb, who wanted to have 427 Camaro to use as a Super Stock drag racing car. NHRA rules stated that at least 50 vehicles had to be built for the car to qualify for racing, so Gibb ordered 50 for his dealership. All fifty of his cars included the ZL-1 options:
Z22 Rally Sport Package
J50 power brakes
N40 power steering
V10 tachometer
racig style rearview mirrors
exhaust resonators
dual exhaust with tailpipe extensions
custom steering wheel
F70-15 black sidewall tires with raised gold lettering
Custom lug nuts and center caps
Custom instrument cluster
Identification decals on the hood, grille, and rear panel
Besides the 50 ZL-1's sent to Gibb's dealership, 19 other ZL-1's were produced, totalling 69.
On the dragstrip, the ZL-1 ran a 10.41 sec @ 128 mph 1/4 mile with racing slicks.
